Many people today have realized the dream of being completely off the grid by combining wind and solar energy. Small sized affordable wind generators are available today for the home user, and they are being combined with photovoltaic cells for power generation. It’s obvious that fossil fuel energy costs are going to keep on rising making it harder to afford getting power from the grid.

Wind energy is form of renewable energy. This ‘new’ source of energy is getting more popular and not without reason. In various parts in the world big wind turbine parks are placed by corporate businesses yielding big quantities of energy that can be sold as environmental friendly or ‘green’ energy. Wind energy is big business. Big companies profit from renewable energy but also invest substantially in this new renewable energy source.

We have been using the energy of the wind for thousands of years. There were boats propelled by wind sailing along the Nile River in 5000 B.C. By 200 B.C., there were simple windmills in China pumping water. At the same time Persian were using vertical-axis windmills with woven reed sails to grind grain.

Renewable wind energy is the fastest growing source of power of any renewable energy sources and technologies. With renewable wind energy, the flow of air turns wind turbines to create electricity. As the speed of the wind turning the turbines increases, the amount of power the turbine produces increases as well. In areas where winds are strong, renewable wind energy is a smart choice for providing power to homes and businesses.

Wind energy is a converted form of solar energy. The sun’s radiation heats different parts of the earth at different rates—most notably during the day and night, but also when different surfaces (for example, water and land) absorb or reflect at different rates. This in turn causes portions of the atmosphere to warm differently. Hot air rises, reducing the atmospheric pressure at the earth’s surface, and cooler air is drawn in to replace it. The result is wind.

It is safe to say that wind energy is essentially free energy. It comes from the heating effect of the earth’s surface by the sun. This heating effect is irregular because of the uneven surface of the earth. It therefore gives rise to airstreams that move between the cooler zones and the hotter zones. This is the wind that blows and that makes the blades on the wind turbines move and thus generate electricity.
